The importance of Latinx LGBTQ+ Writers (Cemetery Boys)
Written by: Sabrina Cabrera Rivera
At MIJA Pride month is every month. We love celebrating our brothers, sisters, and nonbinary babes within the LGBTQ+ community. While we know that media and literature are growing more and more diverse as time passes, it seems a little difficult to find characters or authors of color that are also in the LGBT community.
We have all felt in one way or another how it feels to not see yourself in stories.
We also know how empowering it is when you are able to see the spitting image of yourself in characters and think that maybe you aren’t alone in this world. That there are others just like you, who are going through similar struggles and still have their happy ending.
So we thought that we could share our current favorite read! Recently we have read Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. We are obsessed!
Cemetery Boys was the debut book for Aiden Thomas. Who is a trans, latinx, New York Bestselling author from California!
Their story is set in modern day California and filled to the brim with brujix traditions and Latinx culture
Our main character, Yadriel is determined to prove himself as a brujo when his traditional LAtinx family struggles with his gender. With the help of his cousin, Maritza (a vegan bruja),he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free.
Although, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school's resident bad boy. Julian is determined to find out how he died and tie some loose ends before he goes to the other side. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.
We don’t want him to leave either!
Honestly once we hand the book in our hands? We could not put it down! It is most definitely a must read. And a re-read! So Mijas, take a look and share some of your thoughts!
If you want more from Aiden Thomas, they have another book out called Lost In The Neverwoods. Think Peter Pan meets Nancy Drew.
I already have it saved on my wishlist!
