Stigma of  Being Alone

Humans are social creatures. Most of us truly thrive in sharing our experiences with each other because it creates strong bonds between friends and everlasting memories. We grew up with society telling us that it is a norm to go out and have someone constantly by our side but if we don’t then we are often thought of as lonely and a bit strange for trying things on our own.

Sometimes being alone is a good thing! It is gratifying to be able to do things on your own! Mija, it is truly about taking care of yourself. The best way to think about it is probably to imagine that you are going on a date. Nadie puede amarte mas que tu misma. You are taking yourself out and providing the best experience that you deserve. You deserve to go out into the world with your head held high. It could be something as small as getting an ice-cream or doing something grand as traveling alone. This is the perfect time to take a moment and get to know yourself. A date with yourself is for you to be unapologetically you.

Things That Everyone Should Try Once on Their Own

  • Going to the Movies
  •         We know this is a strange one. Movies are often a weekend activity that people plan to do with friends. It is a small experience of catching a late night showing on a Friday night to watch that one movie you have been dying to see since the trailer came out. Although not everyone has weekends off and sometimes you and your friends’ work or school schedules don’t match up. You could wait for an opportunity and try to plan ahead  but you might get a handful of spoilers online. No one wants to deal with spoilers. By going by yourself, there is no need to really plan ahead. You get to order all the food you want and no one will talk to you throughout the movie. While it might feel a little awkward at first but once you lean back and eat some popcorn, you will realize that no one is actually paying attention if you are alone or not. They will be too focused on the movie to care and honestly, so will you.

  • Concerts
  •         It isn’t as scary as you think. While it is a bit dull  to wait for the concert to start , we promise you that it is truly an amazing experience. This is probably the most alone activity you could do while being surrounded by hundreds of people. The best part is you’d all be singing the same songs and feeling the same emotions. You can dance or vibe to the music to your heart's content. No one is going to think twice because odds are that they are just as into the music as you are. You could even meet new people!

  • Travel
  •         Mira bella, now this is if you are feeling daring. Traveling alone isn’t as scary as you might think but you have to be prepared for everything. I traveled for the first time this year to New York back in March, right before the pandemic had officially broken out, it was probably one of my favorite experiences. I got to do everything at my own pace and didn’t feel pressured into doing things that I wasn’t really interested in. It was a tad more difficult to get photos of myself during this experience but I was able to meet some very nice security guards that were willing to take my picture for me. I got to venture out as I discovered what I liked about New York City.

Taking Care of Your Mental Health

Mija, we want to remind you that it is very important to take care of your mental health. Especially during these trying times. For some people it is as simple as just taking a day to themselves to rest at home and binge Netflix or do a face mask in a warm bubble bath. For others it could be doing these small adventures that get you out of the house and out of your head. We know that Covid-19 has stopped us from certain activities but you don’t have to do something grand to take yourself out. It could honestly be as small as getting some ice-cream and blasting music in your car for a few minutes.
